Clare meets the Cardinal
June 16, 2010Today as part of my work with EIFA, i visited the new ‘Punjabn’ De Rasoi’ café in Leith – a social enterprise café run by women from the Sikh Sanjog in Leith. The visit was particularly special as it was also the day His Emminence Cardinal Keith Patrick O’Brien, the Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh and leader of the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland chose to have punjabi food for his lunch.
It was a great morning. I was particularly in awe of the women’s hard work to get the café open. It now offers women who have never worked before the opportunity to volunteer in a public café, cooking and socialising with the public. Also, the café is working to break down barriers and misconceptions that the Sikh community isolates itself from the rest of the Edinburgh community.
The Cardinal was greeted with Indian Masala Tea and something like phori (for those of you down with the Bangla lingo) and then learnt how to make his first chappati!! Which apparently was better than John Swinney, the Finance Minister’s attempt a few months ago.
It was a really good event and hopefully the Cardinal’s presence will draw some attention to what is an incredible social enterprise venture, encouraging the empowerment of women and of course, feeding the masses with really good haggis pakora!!!
The day was especially memorable for me, as the Cardinal was kind enough to give us a lift back to the office in his car
Over and out xxx
It’s the final countdown…. do do dooo do…
June 13, 2010
Well, yesterday was a great day for all! The Diversity Cup was a complete success, with a repeat final of last year but with FFWPU Youth winning instead of the mighty Glasgow Ansar… and that’s where my knowledge of football ends sadly. Although I hear people weren’t happy with the England result or something. Moulee and I were baking…
Greenworks and LGBT Youth took part in Leith festival, and by the amount of people we saw with henna tattoos and green fingers, they both seemed to go down a treat.
Tonight is our last host home social (before the farewell), and we’re having a pub quiz at the Dockers’ Club on Academy street in Leith starting at 5pm. Come one come all! A little birdy told me that there may be rice crispy cakes floating around….

Busy busy busy busy busy busy busy beeeeeeeeeeeeeeees
June 10, 2010
Well, following our incredibly successful GCD at Greenworks, which involved clearing the yard of a mountain of pallets; sawing, sanding and constructing planters to go on sale at Leith Festival; painting a shed also to be used at Leith Festival; painting the workshop and planting vegetables and plants, we are now planning the next step! (Excuse the long sentence…)
For lots of us, this Saturday is a big one, with Edinburgh Inter-Faith Association’s version of the World Cup, the Diversity Cup on at World of Football in Edinburgh and two charities, LGBT Youth and Greenworks having stands at Leith Festival. We also have our host home and volunteer placement social on Sunday – a pub quiz which will hopefully bring everyone together for a laugh and to share their experiences of having us around.
The debrief team are running round like headless chickens trying to organise what is proving to be a very busy few days, and everyone else is trying to get things together for our Community Farewell – due to be on the 22nd June so far…. Oh! and, our next CAD is stewarding at the Moonwalk on the weekend of the 18th June.
So basically, if you run into a GX Volunteer anytime soon and they happen to be asleep on a park bench, you’ll know it’s because they’ve simply taken a 5 minute breather from life!
Equally, if you see me asleep on the 37 bus, please wake me up before my stop!
Over and out.
Love Clare

A bit soggy, but ready for the next challenge!
June 1, 2010Hello Friends,
Well, we all had a fab time at Knockengorroch festival! Programme selling, dog catching, night watching, survey taking and ceilidh dancing! Sadly, one Ceilidh related accident has led to a previously able-bodied Persia being more of a hoppy Persia, but we think she enjoyed it all the same. One group of GXV’s cooked non-stop for more than 5 hours to create a kichuri feast for festival VIPs, battling with one hob and practically no work space. Clearly Bangla style picnics in Bangladeshi flood plains were good preparation! (Photos to follow…)
You may already know, but this Saturday is UN World Environment Day, and we’re all hopping (in solidarity with Persia) down to Greenworks to lend a greenhand for our Environment CAD. The team will be overhauling the young charity’s work yard and helping to build new planters for Leith Festival Gala Day on Saturday 12th June. If you’re in Edinburgh this weekend then come join the green festivities at Graham Street. We would love to see you!
